Does A Neti Pot Really Work?
A neti pot is one of those devices that’s simple in theory, which makes it easy to use incorrectly. But when it works its magic, you can feel more relief from your allergies and congestion than you ever imagined.
If you’ve never seen one, a neti pot is a container that looks like a teapot, with a spout on one end and a handle on the other. The proper way to use a neti pot is to:
- Fill the pot with specially prepared water or a saline solution. (IMPORTANT: The liquid must be prepared according to the safety instructions to avoid infection.)
- Over a sink, tilt your head to the side so your chin and forehead are about level.
- Pour the solution into one nostril so that it flows through your nasal passages and out the other nostril. Repeat for the other side.
The most common saline solutions are a mix of saline and water which is designed to flow through your nasal passages and sinuses without pain or irritation. Your nose is basically a big air filter keeping dust, pollen and bacteria from making their way into your lungs.
When this filter collects too much debris, you feel sniffly, stuffed up and miserable. The saline flushes out all the particles, making the neti pot an easy, medication-free way to fight back against allergy and cold symptoms.
Neti pots are dependable and work immediately. But it’s important to use it safely. Don’t use tap water and make sure you disinfect the pot fully. Bacteria can infiltrate your nose through the water, leaving you with worse problems than you’re trying to treat.
