How To Fend Off Mosquitoes

It’s the middle of summer, the sun is shining, and all you want to do is spend time out in the beautiful weather. But the mosquitoes won’t let you.

If you feel like the pesky bugs have singled you out as their victim this summer, take a look at these tips for how to fend off mosquitoes.

1. Watch out for standing water

First things first, you need to make sure you’re not making the problem worse. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, which means you need to seek out all those empty flower pots, kiddie pools and trash can lids and dump them out.

2. Topical home remedies

Mosquitoes may be nasty, but they are also sensitive to lots of chemicals that humans find tolerable. Apple cider vinegar, one of the great remedies for all sorts of ailments, will repel insects when you put it on your skin. The same is said to be true of lemon eucalyptus oil, baby oil, imitation vanilla extract and even garlic.

3. Natural herb repellents

Mosquitoes are made queasy by the oils in lots of herbs, including citronella, rosemary, mint, marigolds and cloves. You can plant some of these plants in pots around seating or gathering areas. Or put a few drops of essential oil in with your clothes when you dry then to coat them in a natural mosquito repellent.

4. Repellent candles

Citronella candles are the most popular option to keep biting pests away, but sometimes they just don’t seem to do the trick. There are other candle options on the market, including ones that add other essential oils to citronella or water-based candles that claim to be chemical-free.

There are tens of hundreds of mosquito repelling products on the market, and sometimes it’s just a matter of finding which one works best with your body. Come see your options at your local Family Pharmacy.
