Resolutions That Make A Difference

 In Blog

It’s that time of year again, when you find out just how much willpower you have, to follow through on your New Year’s resolutions.

Last year it was losing weight, and the year before that it was watching less TV. This year it’s time for a resolution that really makes a difference in the world, not just in your life. Here are some ideas that will help you feel good about your impact in 2017.

Start Recycling

The EPA estimates that 42% of the greenhouse gases emitted in America come from transporting, processing and disposing of the foods and products we consume daily. That means that just by going about your daily life using things and throwing them away, you’re contributing to the erosion of the ozone layer.

Almost every city has a center that will recycle your garbage if you take the time to sort out the plastic, glass and paper. Some cities even offer recycling as part of their weekly pick-up service. You can be sure that your effort makes a real difference in the health of the environment.

Use Reusable Grocery Bags

Plastic is one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century, as well as one that creates a lot of waste that doesn’t decompose quickly. And one of the places where consumers use the most plastic is at the grocery store.

With a small investment in reusable cloth grocery bags, you’re cutting back on the amount of plastic that makes its way into landfills in your community. It’s an easy, tangible way to reduce your waste in 2017.

Consume less energy around your home.

Trash and wasted food lead to harmful greenhouse gases, and the same is also true for how much energy you use in your home. Every watt of energy you use or gas you burn comes from a plant where that energy is produced.

It’s easy to make a habit out of limiting your energy use. Turn off light switches whenever you room, set your thermostat lower every time you’re out or asleep, and limit your use of televisions. Not only will your electric bill go down, you’ll know it’s because you’re helping your electric plant burn off a little bit less greenhouse gas.

The world might not know that you’re contributing to the health of the planet, but you can have the satisfaction of knowing that your actions have real-world benefits. Family Pharmacy wishes you a happy New Year full of positive change and good health.
